At the end of that year, the allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians back at home and 25th April became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

( 13th February 2022 )
The year was 268 in Rome, when Emperor Claudius II wanted a fierce team of young men to fight in his armies. He found that when young men were in love or shared their lives with a wife and children, they tended to be more cautious. So, he outlawed marriage. A brave priest named Valentine however continued performing marriage ceremonies in secret before he was found and put to death on February the 14th. Centuries later the Catholic Church made the kindly priest a saint. Valentine’s death and the tradition of love that he created is celebrated world-wide by people of all religions. People send cards, flowers and candy in countries around the world.

In the early 1800s the date, called Foundation Day, was celebrated by politicians and businessmen of New South Wales with private dinners. It then began to be called Anniversary Day, and in 1836 the first Anniversary Regatta, still held as the Australia Day Regatta and the oldest such sailing race in the world, was run in Sydney Harbor. In 1988, January 26 became a national public holiday.

When play is fun and child-directed, children are motivated to engage in opportunities to learn. This often reveals children’s ideas and understanding, and points to more opportunities for planned experiences that extend their learning. Play allows children to explore, discover, negotiate, take risks, create meaning and solve problems – important foundations for developing literacy, numeracy and social skills.

In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day – a day to remember those who died in World War One.
After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day
